A Message from the President of MCBA

January 3, 2016

Dear Members and Friends of MCBA,

2016 was an unprecedented, challenging year in so many respects.  It was a year of worldwide upheaval and uncertainty, and a year of stunning political developments in the United States.  We lost many icons in the entertainment world, and said goodbye to a number of cherished friends and colleagues here in Monterey County.  Perhaps the only thing NOT surprising about 2016 was that the Monterey County Bar Association continued to grow and thrive under the steady, dedicated leadership of Executive Director Jennifer Dalton and President Lori Espinoza.
I am honored and privileged to serve the MCBA as President in 2017.   I will be joined by a talented and enthusiastic Board of Directors reflecting the broad spectrum of legal practitioners in Monterey County.
During this next year I hope to expand and facilitate pro bono opportunities for our members to provide more direct low-cost and no-cost legal services to the people who need it most, including the indigent, veterans, and immigrants.  I also look forward to creating a forum for a wide range of legal practitioners and scholars to educate the public and the legal community regarding important legal issues of the day.  We anticipate that these programs will, in most cases, provide continuing legal education credit, but it is my expectation that many of them will be open to the general public and promoted beyond the usual MCBA channels.  It is my hope that this will promote a greater understanding of our legal system, including the importance of seemingly obscure legal topics to the lives of ordinary Americans.  The coming years promise to be a time of challenges, changes, and instability.  Although the origins of the phrase remain murky, it has never been more true that "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."  Education and awareness are the keys to maintaining both our freedom and our equilibrium in a changing world.

William Litt

2017 MCBA President
